Globe Knights to Compete for a National Basketball Championship

The Globe Institute of Technology Knights (23-8) are set to compete in Hutchinson Kansas the week of March 22-26 for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division One Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament, after defeating Region 15 Rival Monroe College 75-73 in the District 3 Championship Game held yesterday at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York.
In a long and successful season, the Knights will shoot for their first National Championship in the double-elimination tournament. Globe defeated long time junior college power Allegany College of Maryland 71-60 in the District 3 semifinal game on Saturday afternoon while Monroe College defeated Brunswick Community College of North Carolina 74-65 in the other semifinal game. Globe won the championship game with poise (8 turnovers while Monroe committed 19) and the scoring of District 3 MVP Ricky Smith (Brooklyn, NY, Lincoln HS), who poured in 22 points in the title game after hitting for 18 points in the semifinal contest. Also, the defense of Marcus Williams with 10 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots (Jersey City, St. Anthony HS) who is coming off a 2004 New Jersey State Championship while at St. Anthony’s High School where he played for legendary coach Bob Hurley.
The Knights first game at the National Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, 5:00 p.m. vs. Seminole State College of Oklahoma (22-11). Globe has no previous history against Seminole State.
The Knights leading scorer for the season has been sophomore Brian Ormon, of Schenectady, NY who at 6’7 is averaging 17.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.
District 3 All-Tournament selection, Ade Swann (Queens, NY, LaSalle Academy) chipped in with 19 points and 14 assists for the weekend.
Globe Institute of Technology, located in lower Manhattan, has sent 18 players to Division One schools in the past 5 years including 4 from last years squad that finished 24-5 and won the Region XV Division One Men’s Basketball Regular Season Championship. The Knights featured All-American Jamal Nichols (DePaul), Shakiem Mitchell (Southern Mississippi), Roscoe Biggers (Baylor University) and Jason Holeyfield (Quinnipiac University).
Former Knight Victor Sanikidze was recently drafted #42 overall in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks becoming the first Globe player in its short 6 year history to be drafted by the NBA
