Ilya Figler won an International Master Title competing in
chess last week. This is his second International Master "Norm".
He competed in the Fox Wood 2004 Chess Tournament, one of the
largest tournaments in the United States . Mr. Figler competed
with three Grand Masters, and five International Masters. The
Alumni and Globe are proud to congratulate Mr. Figler on his
successes. Mr. Figler earned an Associate Degree in computer
programming in 2000. As of April 20004, the chess master Mr.
Figler is ranked 17th , according to the Grand Prix Standings
list.

WORLD OPEN

Figler, Globe Institute of Technology's chess team took second place
honors at the world's largest open chess tournament, the 27th Annual
World Open, held recently in Philadelphia. |
The Globe Institute team faced about 1,500 other chess players
representing teams from as far away as Asia, Latin America and Europe,
Figler said.
Globe scored 21 points to take the second place finish, just three points behind
the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The Maryland University's College Park
campus placed third with 17.5 points, Figler said. |

"This was just our first year of competition,
and we are very proud of the results," said Figler, a former three-time
national chess champion of Moldova.
Also on the team are Globe students Roshel Yakubov, Salomon Gulamov and
Vadim Khaimov.
The first fully accredited, four-year degree granting senior college founded by Russian
immigrants, Globe Institute of Technology is a leader in the teaching of
information technology. The Manhattan-based college boasts 80 percent
graduation and job placement rates, and one of the lowest student default rates
in the nation, 1.7 percent, said Irena Shteyn, Globe's academic dean.
